Visit West Park Pump Track, South Shields
If your wild child is more inclined towards wheels than wellies, South Tyneside's new pump track is well worth the trip. Opened in 2026 on the site of four long unused tennis courts, this £175,000 facility offers a large, flowing tarmac circuit designed for bikes, scooters, skates and skateboards, plus a dedicated toddler section for those just learning to balance. It's already proved enormously popular since opening, and it's entirely free to use.
The lowdown:
Where: West Park, off West Park Road, South Shields
When: Open access, no set hours, though daylight is obviously advisable
Cost: Completely free to use
Parking: Street parking is available nearby; South Shields town and seafront also have several pay and display car parks within easy reach if you're combining the visit with a trip to the coast
Why your wild child will love it: it's built specifically for riders of all ages and abilities, from little ones on balance bikes right up to more confident scooter and skateboard riders looking to hone their skills. The rumble area and learn to ride section make it a genuinely welcoming spot for beginners, not just the already accomplished.
