Plessey Woods

Visit Plessey Woods Country Park

Known locally as Bluebell Woods, Plessey Woods is a hundred acres of woodland, wildflower meadow and riverside tucked along the River Blyth between Bedlington and Cramlington. It has a lovely, unhurried feel to it, with winding nature trails, a sculpture trail dotted through the trees, and a river bank where otters and kingfishers occasionally make an appearance if you're patient. It's the sort of gentle countryside spot that rewards a slow wander rather than a dash.

• Where: Plessey Woods Country Park, Shields Road, Plessey, near Bedlington, Northumberland, NE22 6HZ

• When: Park gates open during daylight hours, all year round. The visitor centre and café typically open 10am to 4pm, though it's worth checking seasonal variations.

• Cost: Free to enter the park

• Parking: The first hour is free, then £1.60 for up to two hours or £3 for over two hours. Annual permits are available for regular visitors.

  
  

Why your wild child will love it: there's a proper adventure play area built from natural timber, a self guided orienteering route with maps available from the visitor centre, and plenty of space along the riverbank for den building and paddling on warmer days. The café overlooks the play area and picnic spot, handy for keeping an eye on things while you catch your breath.
