Visit Bolam Lake Country Park

Bolam Lake is proper Northumberland countryside — a broad, still lake ringed by woodland, about nine miles west of Morpeth, with a flat, fully accessible path running the whole way round. It's the kind of place where a wild child can genuinely stretch their legs, keep an eye out for red squirrels and roe deer, and generally exist at full volume without troubling a soul. The full loop is only around a mile, manageable even for smaller legs, with woodland either side to explore if there's more energy still to burn.

The lowdown:

• Where: Bolam Lake Country Park, near Belsay, signposted off the A696 (postcode NE20 0HE)

• When: Gates open during daylight hours, all year round

• Cost: Entry to the park itself is free — only the car parks charge

• Parking: The first hour is free at all three car parks, with a small charge thereafter (roughly £1.60–£2.50 for two hours, up to about £4.50 for a full day). Blue Badge holders park free throughout.

  
  

Why your wild child will love it: this is proper wellies-on territory — muddy paths, natural den-building spots in the woods, ducks and swans to admire on the lake, and a bird hide worth a peek through. A small cash-only café by the Boathouse Wood car park serves hot drinks and cake for when everyone needs a pause, and toilets are open daily, 9.30am–5pm.
