Locomotion

A FREE day out that entertains the kids? It's a yes from us

If you're looking for a genuinely brilliant, completely free day out that the kids will still be talking about on the way home, Locomotion in Shildon needs to be on your radar. This is not your average museum. It's home to one of the most impressive collections of historic locomotives in the country, it's part of the National Railway Museum family, and it sits in the kind of open, sprawling space that high-energy kids absolutely thrive in.

We've been, we've explored and we even rode the Flying Scotsman. Yes, that Flying Scotsman. It was one of those days.

What is Locomotion?

Locomotion is the National Railway Museum at Sheldon, part of the Science Museum Group and completely free to enter. Shildon holds the title of the world's first railway town, and the museum brings that history to life in a way that actually keeps kids engaged. Think enormous engines, interactive displays, hands-on areas and a packed events calendar that transforms the place throughout the year.

What the Kids Will LOVE

Our two (aged 5 and 9) were both completely absorbed from the moment we arrived. The sheer scale of the locomotives is genuinely jaw-dropping even for adults. There is something about standing next to a full size steam engine that stops even the most distracted child in their tracks.

The interactive elements are well thought out for different ages. Our 5 year old loved the hands-on activities, while our 9 year old got stuck into the more detailed exhibits and could have spent twice as long there. The outdoor areas give them space to run and reset between the indoor galleries, which, if you have high energy kids you'll know is essential.

And then there was the Flying Scotsman, an iconic, world famous locomotive that we actually got to ride on during a special event. If you ever see an event like this come up, book it immediately.

Events Not To Miss

Locomotives event calendar is what takes this from a good day out to a great one. Here's what's coming up:

Celebrate Science

27 to 29 October 2026

In partnership with Durham University, this October half term event brings hands-on science experiments to the museum. Perfect for curious kids who like to get involved and make things happen. A great pairing with the railway exhibits for children who love to understand how things work.

Twilight Trains

31 October to 1 November 2026

A magical family event celebrating lights and lanterns, running across Halloween weekend. This is the one for younger children especially. The combination of the atmospheric museum setting, lanterns and a touch of seasonal magic makes for something genuinely special. A lovely alternative to the more crazy Halloween events out there.

Shildon Brick Show

14 to 15 November 2026

LEGO fans, this one's for you. the Brick Alley Lego User Group return with model layouts, and displays that will have both kids and adults quietly obsessed. Our 9 year old would never forgive us for missing this one.

Christmas Market

28 to 29 November 2026

Handmade goods, workshops and demonstrations in partnership with Weardale Makers Market. A lovely way to start the festive season, pick up something unique and let the kids soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

Christmas Festival
